Every year the Songwriter’s Association of Canada does a songwriting challenge. You have to write one song a week in response to a challenge issued by a pro. This week’s challenge was to take two old unfinished songs and mash them up into one finished song. Here’s what I came up with:

This was quite the challenge and I only really had today to work on it. First I went into voice memos on my iPhone, which is where I record every melody snippet, idea, guitar lick, etc. I come up with. I found two pretty old melodies with some words that I’d never gone back to work on. I spent an hour or so trying to mash them together, but in the end inspiration struck and a whole new song came out of just one of the ideas. I kept trying to find the story in the chorus and finally realized it was about two people falling in love and spending the rest of their lives together.

This has been a great challenge and great motivation to keep writing and recording. I’ve been having a lot of fun getting the creative juices flowing!
