Tonight is our last night in Paris. It has been amazing, even if has been mostly rain and cloud. Heidi and I were just at an Internet cafe trying to print directions to the south of France. 1 hour, 5 euros, and two pages later we are ready for our french driving experience: 8 hours from Paris to the south of France.

Today was yet another incredible day. We took the RER (like a GO train for you Toronto people) out to Versailles and walked through the castle and the grounds. It was crazy to see the opulence and grandeur of the French monarchies, including my new favorite figure, Napoleon.

Versailles is the largest palace ever built by a sovereign. It was initiated and home to Louis XIV, the Sun-King and one of France’s most powerful monarchs. It was also the scene of the deposition of Louis XVI during the French revolution. I found myself wondering what the rioting peasants who broke in would have thought of it. They would have seen the palace’s interior without ever having known it before. The opulence outside only increases on the interior. I imagine it could only have fueled their anger.

This evening I went to Sacre-Coeur and Mont-Martre. Sacre-Coeur is gorgeous, and the view from the steps is incredible. Definitely the best view of Paris I had, and I’ve had some incredible views.

I’m going to miss Paris, it is a beautiful city with so many amazing things to see. If you are going to visit I highly recommend the Museum Pass. You get unlimited access to all the museums I’ve mentioned here, and at all but Versailles and Notre Dame you get to skip the lines (really handy at the Louvre especially).

Alright, off to the South!
