I am sitting on a train halfway between Cordoba and Valencia. It is our last day in Spain, we fly out of Valencia tomorrow morning.
Spain has been a lot of fun. Barcelona was great, and I saw a lot of cool things in Madrid, but Cordoba was my favorite. It helped that we went straight to our hostel and our room turned out to practically be a hotel room. Two comfortable beds, a proper (clean!) bathroom, and even A/C.
From there we walked into the old city with yet another free site. It was the “Castle of the Christian Kings,” a museum and gardens in the castle built after Cordoba was reconquered by the Christians in the 12th century. The castle was great, with an amazing view from their tower, we also walked through the gardens which were splendid.
We left there and wandered through the old city in the direction of La Mezquita. It is a site that was originally a roman temple, then a visigothic cathedral, the cathedral was demolished when the muslims took over Cordoba in (I believe) the 9th century. They built a huge mosque, the mosque was rededicated as a cathedral and in the middle a beautiful basilica was built.
It is hard to explain, but it is almost as if there are walls of light instead of real walls for the cathedral.
I highly recommend seeing it if you are ever in Spain. It is worth the trip.
We went out trying to find Tapas or dinner, but it was impossible to find anyone who spoke enough English or French to order from. We ended up buying some fresh baked bread, Havarti cheese, wine, and these delicious cheese filled pastries and made a meal of it on the terrace of our building.
I think with the sunshine, the beauty of the city, and how much fun it was, yesterday has been the best day of my trip so far. I’m trying to plot my Rome adventure. We head there tomorrow.
