Don Miller, my favorite Christian Author* had this to say to Pat Robertson:
An appropriate response to Pat Robertson:
“You seem angry and tired. Christ loves you. He is not impressed with your religious posturing. He really loves you. You don’t have to hide behind anything anymore. The good news really is that good.”
I think that is about perfect. Read his whole post.
*I guess by necessity he published with a Christian publishing house, but I see him as almost a young Buechner in terms of honesty.
Well not quite, at least one very important person is missing. I could regale you with stories, old and new, of my time here at Augustine College and in time I will. I just want to say for the time being that it was the most formative, and the best, year of my life so far. I got to catch up with a friend from my year who was visiting this weekend as well, and also meet the current class.
I’ve had great conversations, and been given good reading, on everything from Music to Euthanasia to Ecumenism. This school draws together so many different types of people, and teaches them to think well and widely. As with any small institution they constantly require funding, so if you think you can help visit their “support” page.
I’ve been trying to figure out whether I really need a laptop. Most of the things I would need my laptop for, email, web browsing, even basic media production, I can use my iPhone for. I’m even writing this on my iPhone at my parents place, I left the laptop at home. That being said, I need a full size keyboard for note-taking. If I could get one for my iPhone it would seriously reduce my need for a laptop. As well, it would be helpful to have access to the same files from various programs. So the answer for the time being is yes, I still need a laptop. But not all the time anymore.
If I could only have one meal a day it would be breakfast. Breakfast is a meal without boundaries, you can have your meat (bacon) and desert (pancakes) on the same plate without anybody judging you. Imagine trying to eat both cake and steak at the same time. You would gross people out. But it is perfectly acceptable if bacon and pancakes end up in the same mouthful. Time to make myself an omelette.
Yesterday morning I was at a rather large church here in Toronto. It was a good service, the preacher there is very good. It was strange though because it was one of their pastors last days. He was changing roles. Instead of replacing him from within the congregation they had flown in a pastor from Australia. The church is a good church, the teaching is good. But it is a church of thousands, I found it hard to believe that they could not find someone from within their own community to step up and take a leadership role.
I hesitate to say at what size a church should be seeking pastors from within the community, because Christian discipleship means any church should be raising up leaders from within its congregation. I guess it just stuns me more when a church that has thousands to draw from goes off continent to find a new pastor. Shouldn’t finding the right person be easier when you have a large church?
This week I’m going to do the top five songs I’ve been listening to.
#5 All the right Moves, OneRepublic
I heard this song for the first time yesterday. I’ve listened to it way too many times since then. It definitely helps cement Ryan Tedder, lead singer, as the leading producer of Epic pop/rock in my opinion. Decent lyrics, great melody, and cool instrumentation. You can watch the video for the song on the OneRepublic website.
#4 Armistice, MuteMath
This is the title track off of MuteMath’s new album. Definitely continuing the trend of amazing music from this band. I love the delayed guitar, the horns, and the chorus. If you can listen to this song without moving, even a little bit, you have no soul.
#3 It’s my Life/Confessions, Glee Cast
If you aren’t watching Glee yet you aren’t getting all the laughs you can. My girlfriend and I have been watching it for a couple of weeks. I’ve enjoyed the odd mashup in my time, but this one was perfect. Definitely not something you would ever see in a highschool, but still awesome.

#2 Help, I’m alive, Metric
This song is the debut track on Fantasies, Metric’s latest album and the debut of my enjoyment of Canadian Indie music. Which I had largely dismissed up until this point. The song itself has very different parts, but coalesces into something very interesting to listen to. Rock is definitely not dead.
#1 Although it is the Night, Rob Mathes Rob Mathes is a man who has been in the Friday Five before. He is often in the background doing arrangements or production for many of the hits you hear on the radio today. This song is a beautiful, haunting look into losing, and finding your way. In contemporary songwriting you need three things to have a great song, Lyrics, Harmony, and Melody. This song is tops in all three areas. Mathes deserves a wider audience than he has.
I finally saw the latest Indiana Jones movie. I don’t think it was that bad, but that tends to happen when I’ve been told a movie is awful. All I have to say is (spoiler alert):
Aliens? Again, Spielberg? There are other ways to finish a movie.
I sit here in between.
In between where I was and where I’m going with a hard, barely carpeted floor beneath me.
In between where we were friends and where we will be memories.
I can stand the distance, growing apart, with miles and years between just before now and wherever I go.
Just don’t forget me, ok?
Wow,
I haven’t often used this as a forum for personal stories, and I don’t really intend to start, but holy crap, what a week.
I almost broke down yesterday trying to pack a room I thought was maybe eight or nine boxes into what turned out to be twenty or so. And then figuring out how to ship them home. I spent today in Halifax being a tourist, sleeping on the floor of a stranger who turned out to be awesome, and eating a gigantic never ending lunch at an amazing little restaurant called… shoot, the name escapes me right now.
Now I’m moving home permanently. I have not been home without knowing when I’m leaving again in three years. It is quite strange, but kind of exciting. I look forward to spending time with people too long neglected. I also can’t wait to make music with my siblings. But there are a lot of people in this eastern part of Canada that I will sorely miss.
I guess this is it. We’ll be back to normal in a few days.
