I’m addicted to adjectives.  It started when I was young.  I remember a friend saying to my siblings and I: “You guys use a lot of adjectives, do you really mean what you say.”  It stuck with me.  What I’ve discovered in my turn to twitter is that adjectives are the first things to go.  Twitter forces you to distill what you want to say to its fundamental meaning.  Hopefully it will help me in that regard.

Speaking of Twitter, WordPress has just added a twitter widget which you will find to your right.  You can follow me at twitter.com/liamkinnon.

Waking up…

It has been a long week.  I shut down earlier this week and only finally got enough sleep to feel alive again last night.  I’m reading and writing again, but I’ve got a lot of catch up to do.  I need to figure out a healthier way to work.  I need to write about 40 to 50 pages in the next week and a half, and I’m still not done all the research I need to do for these papers.  However these papers are interesting enough that I might be posting some thoughts here in the next few days.

It has been almost three years in the making.  We had planned to release an album a long long time ago and wrote, recorded, and then worked on a number of songs for what felt like eternity.  Well the first of those songs has finally appeared online.  We will be releasing them over the course of the coming months at www.purevolume.com/substanceoverstyle, myspace.com/substanceoverstyle and on our facebook page (Become a fan!).  I’m really excited about this new stuff (new to you at least).  I hope you will be too.

I finally confirmed that my key worked and that MSB PO Box 545 is really my box after deciding to order a couple of books off of Amazon.  Thanks to a gift certificate from some amazing people.  Anyway, if you want to send me stuff I’d love to have it.  Mostly.

Well it’s another Friday and another top five for you all. I’ve been listening to more music but don’t think I have enough new songs to give you a good new selection of music. This week instead will be the top 5 things to come out of the eighties. That is right, I’m under the impression that we can do some work at redeeming the 80s this week.

#5 Peter Gabriel. An artist who can trace most of his biggest hits to the 80s Peter Gabriel may be one of the more brilliant songwriters and arrangers out there. While songs like 99 red balloons dominated the air Peter Gabriel released subversively intelligent music like “Red Rain” and “In Your Eyes”. I say subversive because it also did quite well on the charts. He is someone I hope I get to see live.

#4 Footloose. A fun movie about dancing, rock n’ roll, and the small town mentality. Also has a great song by Kenny Loggins.

#3 The Police. As you can read here I love the Police. They came from the eighties. That is all.

#2 The Princess Bride. I really don’t think you can talk about this movie. All I can say is that it is hilarious, fun, and an all around good time. I heartily recommend it. I’ve linked to what may be the greatest scene in any movie ever. Which also features a line that I frequently use in Risk.

#1 U2. I throw them here because they too are amazing. It’s hard to call a band that has managed to stay relevant and continues to have chart topping albums an “eighties” band. But if you have such classic albums as “The Joshua Tree” released in the eighties there is no choice but to place these guys at the top of the list. The song I linked to has one of my favorite solos of all time in it. As well as my favorite Edge solo.

Notable Mentions… MTV, Michael Jackson, and I was born in ’87, so you can throw me on this list if you want.

I tend to like hymns, well some hymns.  One was “O for a thousand tongues to sing”.  I remember being really moved by the melody as a young kid.  Moved by the melody, but oh so confused by the lyrics.  You see, I thought it was actually “O for a thousand tons to sink”.  I was so confused as to why we were singing about what I, as a young kid, assumed was the sinking of the titanic.  It was a revelation when I finally read the lyrics, it was kind of like when I discovered there was an R in February and a D in Wednesday, mind boggling.

I'm a coward…

I promised I wouldn’t write whiny posts but I can’t help it sometimes.  Today I was walking home from my class and this very pretty girl with a very cute beagle was walking towards me on the Rideau Canal.  The beagle stopped by me, I reached down to pet it and it skitted away.  We shared a laugh and I… didn’t… say… anything.  Was there a spark?  Probably not, but I’m getting tired of wondering what could have come out of these moments.

Every time this happens I promise myself that next time will be different.  But I guess I have to admit it.  Pretty girls charm me right out of my ability to think.  I get nervous that all I’ll end up saying is something along the lines of, “Uh… I … Uh, like your face.  Woops, I mean your dog”.  So clearly I’m a doofus when it comes to girls.  It certainly explains a lot.

So I’ve been tagged twice now, by my Dad and by Chris Budlong. I was trying to find five things people don’t know about me but most of those things are boring. So here are two things you probably didn’t know about me and six questions. It’s like a tagging bonus round.

The first thing you probably didn’t know about me is that I celtic danced. That’s right, Riverdance style dancing. It was a lot of fun, and as I learned when I did jazz dancing before it, there is an awesome girl to guy ratio (if you’re a guy). However I soon realized that for all the girls there are, the fact that you’re dancing as well doesn’t seem to increase your attractiveness to them. Thus ended one of the many hobbies I had.

The second is that I was a model. I even got to be in a commercial, unfortunately it never aired. We moved to Winnipeg shortly thereafter and I let it slide. I’ve been thinking about getting back into it though preferably to act, which means a decision to return to Toronto for my schooling.

1) What’s the most fun work you’ve ever done, and why?

I thought the whole point of work was that it wasn’t fun. In that case I haven’t really done a whole lot of it. If work is paid labor than I have to say working at Ride for Sight was pretty awesome. It feels great to be a part of something greater that is helping people. I worked with good people and had a rewarding time there. The surprisingly most boring work I’ve done is modeling/acting. The auditions were cool but when I finally landed a gig it was mostly waiting for the one scene they needed me in and the rest of time just waiting back stage. Don’t get me wrong it was cool, just not that great. Actually now that I think about it, stocking shelves from midnight to eight in Winterpeg was the most boring work I’ve done.

2) A. Name one thing you did in the past that you no longer do but wish you did?

There are a lot of things (IE dancing) that I gave up because I wasn’t strong enough to deal with the teasing they invoked, I regret giving up those. If I could go back to the younger me I’d tell him that people tease for two reasons, (a) they’re morons (b) they’re jealous, and that he will be better in the future for having stuck to them. Unfortunately he already had my Mom and he ignored her, bad move.

B. Name one thing you’ve always wanted to do but keep putting it off?

I just got an eyebrow ring, I’d always wanted one of those. The next thing on the list is skydiving…

3) A. What two things would you most like to learn or be better at, and why?

Drums, It would be sweet to be a one man rock band seeing as I already am pretty good at guitar and bass, and can find my way up and down a keyboard. You can hear my band here

I think learning to skydive before actually doing it would probably be a good idea too. Today I watched a plane fly by, I’d like to learn to fly one of those as well.

B. If you could take a class/workshop/apprentice from anyone in the world living or dead, who would it be and what would you hope to learn?

Jesus, and not because he was the greatest teacher ever. But because I’m very much a Thomas, I’d love to see him and just be able to know without the clouds of millenia clouding my sight. After Jesus, to be able to share a pint with The Edge and just talk about guitars, have him show me some stuff, and play around with his billions of effects would be amazing.

4) A. What three words might your best friends or family use to describe you?

It’s more like three letters. A.D.D. , following that I’d hope loyal and trustworthy.

B. Now list two more words you wish described you…

Good looking or clear skinned

5) What are your top three passions? (can be current or past, work, hobbies, or causes)

Guitar and music, Reading (just about anything), history (I love biographies but I’ll read anything). I know I need to get Jesus back up onto this top three, but to put him there now would be dishonest.

6) Write–and answer–one more question that YOU would ask someone

“It seems like most days people get up and there is really no reason not to just stop living, give up, or accept defeat, why don’t you?” There have been times in my life where it has only been the fear of hell or the grace of God. These days it is because I’m getting more and more curious about what lies on the earthly road ahead. I can’t wait to see what the future brings. Even though I’ve seen my share of rough times recently I don’t think for a minute that there aren’t going to be cool times to match and beat the lowest of them.

So now you know a bit about me, I guess if you wanted more you could always hit the about button to the right of this post.
